Recommended team composition

To achieve the best results, we recommend a specific team composition. This will help distribute the workload among team members and streamline the workflow to speed up decision-making.

What Awaits You at the PWSO?

Each team takes charge of a virtual oilfield and makes decisions just like real industry professionals. The PWSO is held in the format of the PetroCup tournament.

PetroCup is a programme for the interactive acquisition and assessment of practical skills in the management of oil and gas production assets, built on digital twins of synthetic oil and gas fields.

You will learn to make field development decisions, work with data from different disciplines, exchange experience with fellow students, and discover how well your knowledge is ready to meet the demands of employers.

What Challenges Will You Face?

All digital twin assets used in PetroCup, are modeled based on real oil and gas fields and include typical complications across all disciplines, generated by PolyPlan software.

The platform enables multidisciplinary teams to perform typical field tasks in a convenient online interface without the need for dynamic simulator keywords or other software related to subsurface and surface infrastructure.

PolyPlan models:

  1. Typical reservoir heterogeneity
  2. Common uncertainties in injection and production for each well
  3. Typical behavior of LWD and wireline logging sensors and common interpretation errors
  4. Cement bond failure and subsequent channelings
  1. The occurrence of spontaneous fracturing in the reservoir
  2. Wellbore clogging during production
  3. Surface facility limitations on production and injection volumes
  4. Drilling of various well types and their completions
  5. Field hydrodynamic and geophysical surveys during both well construction and production, including core sampling

How the Tournament Works?

Throughout the PWSO, teams interpret typical field data — well logs, production surveys, well testing, seismic data, and other sources of information — study well production history, and evaluate reservoir response to various well interventions and stimulation techniques.

During the "Shots", participants make field development management decisions and implement their chosen strategy over a specified number of years:

  • Drilling of new wells: vertical, vertical fractured, multi-fractured horizontal wells
  • Water/gas shut-offs
  • Adjusting production targets
  • Adjusting surface facilities
  • Stimulations
  • Perforations, reperforations, and additional shots
  • Hydraulic fracturing
  • Converting wells from producers to injectors or vice versa

Feedbacks

PetroCup World Student Olympics organized by Nafta College gave us a memorable experience. It is a great platform to apply the knowledge that we have gained from reservoir geology, well testing, logging and drilling. Special thanks to moderators for clarifying our queries during the event. In essence, the tournament was well organized and we are looking forward to take part in the future.

The competition was very competitive and enriching. we learned a lot of things that helped us understand how oil is distributed in the subsurface, how to increase productivity, and how to treat wells. Not only that, it also enabled us to work in the team and strengthened our communication. It was like working in a small company, which was really great.

PetroCup was an excellent execution of our knowledge. It tested our understanding in petrophysics, reservoir engineering, production engineering, well testing and other technical aspects. We were honored to participate and compete with elite students from different countries. Regarding the event, at the beginning we were a little clueless about what we are capable of doing and how we do things, but we learned on the way with the aid of our moderator. Else, everything went smoothly.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to join the competition. It is very interesting because we get to experience how to manage a oil and gas field

I would like to say a big thank you to the organizer team for organizing this event. It was a once of a kind experience we never seen before and we glad that we took the opportunity to explore this competition. I would thank my team for their superb teamworking skills and their willing to sacrifice their valuable time and energy to get the best possible result

On behalf of my team, I thank you for all your help during competition. Although We can not become champions, I believe that we won ourselves in somehow and it was also the first time we got out of our comfort zone to try it. From this We gained a lot of useful knowledge about the real field and how to develop it.... We hope we can get the chance to take part it this game next year. Cheers!
